True Colors
A devotion for the first day of Autumn, September 22

He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season (Psalm 1:3a).
Of the Word
Autumn smells, sights, and tastes are all things to celebrate. The changing angle of the sun brings out different colors in our natural environment. Declining chlorophyll production reveals the true colors of the leaves: red, orange, and gold. Cooler temperatures, the promise of harvest, and the coming rest of winter refresh our bodies and souls.
Changing seasons remind us of God’s constancy and faithfulness in keeping His promises. “While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease” (Genesis 8:22). God also promises that His people will be fruitful in every season of their individual lives. They still bear fruit in old age; they are ever full of sap and green (Psalm 92:14).
As our worldly productivity wanes, our inner self is being renewed day by day (2 Corinthians 4:16b). Our true colors, the fruit of the Spirit, and the strength of God’s grace, are more fully revealed as we mature in Jesus. Because of God’s character and His promises, we can enjoy every season of life.
Walking with my Lord
Unchanging God, the changing seasons remind us of Your faithfulness. Help us to trust Your promise that in every season of life we can bear fruit for Your glory. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
