Chosen. Treasured. Redeemed.

Single-session Bible study on Relationship with God. 4 pages.

“Pick me! Pick me!” are words often heard on a playground. Children often vie for positions of honor and seniority on a team and bombard the team captain with the intensity of their need to “be chosen.” … We are chosen, treasured, and redeemed by God.

Through this Bible study, we pray that we are reminded that we are chosen and treasured by God, so that we can tell the Good News of salvation in Jesus to family and friends.

"Heart" Matters: A Look at Mary

Single-session Bible study on Women Doing God's Work. 4 pages.

Often, we think we know how things are supposed to go, and we are not much interested in things that do not fit into our plan.

When Gabriel announced to Mary that she would have a miracle child — yes, Mary had questions, and she was not hesitant to ask, “But how can this be?” However, Mary’s heart was faithful; her faith had been nurtured by hearing the Word of God in regular worship. She knew God was able to do great things because she knew Scripture and the history of God’s love and care for His people throughout previous generations.

Who’s Number One?

Single-session Bible study on Almighty God, Christian Living, Priorities. 3 pages.

In each season of the year there are teams competing in different sports. In summer, baseball is popular. Each team claims to be number one. Yet, in time, only one team can and will win the championship. Only one can come in first! In a similar way, God reminds us that He will not only lead all season, He will be first in the end.

Our Lord would have us consider:

  • Who or what is number one in my life?
  • Who or what is first in my family?
  • Who is number one in our church?

Steadfast in Christ

Single-session Bible study on Apostle’s Creed, Christian Living. 5 pages. Leader Guide available.

The dictionary defines "steadfast" as "firmly established, unchanging, not fickle or wavering." Oh, no! If this is so, how do we become steadfast in Christ? And how do we remain steadfast in Christ?

The answer is — we cannot! As human beings we sin daily in our thoughts, words, and deeds against God and our neighbors. The truth is, it is Christ who is steadfast to us! It is a gift! Our heavenly Father's steadfast love to us flows from the cross of Christ and gives us everything that we need to be steadfast in Him.

This truth of Holy Scripture is summarized in the Apostles' Creed. It is a baptismal confession of the early Church and is still used today in the Divine Service throughout the world. Martin Luther's beautifully crafted Meanings of the Three Articles of the Apostles' Creed shows God’s steadfastness to us.

Living in Love

Single-session Bible study on loving others, John 13:31–35. 5 pages. Leader Guide available.

2 women, one older and one younger, sitting outside smiling at each other

When he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him. If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and glorify him at once. Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me, and just as I said to the Jews, so now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going you cannot come.’ A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:31–35).

Jesus’ love for us motivates us to love Him and each other. This seems so simple, and yet it is sometimes so difficult to put into practice.

Turning the Sailboat

Single-session Bible study on Seasons of Life, Vocation, Turning Points in Life. 7 pages. Leader Guide available.

woman seated on edge of sailboat, shading her eyes with her hand, looking off into the distance

I learned how to sail as a kid, and one of the earliest lessons — after identifying starboard and port — is how to turn the sailboat. You cannot just sail across the lake. Eventually, you will need to turn the sailboat and come back to port. Alas, turning the boat can be tricky. The skipper yells, “Ready about!” only after she has paid attention to the wind, the waves, the compass point, the boom, the jib, the tiller, and the crew.

The same is true in our lives, is it not? When we leave one season, we turn to another. Turns can be tricky.

Living Hope in a Graveyard

Single-session Bible study on Comfort and Hope. 6 pages. Leader Guide available.

Graveyards can be things that are scary or mysterious. For some they are superstitious, and for many they are places filled with sorrow. However, for Christians graveyards are places that speak of the hope we have in Christ and of the resurrection. They are places where our Lord meets those who sit in sorrow and fills them with living hope, and they are places where the faithful await the day of their own raising on the Last Day to the joy of life eternal.

The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 15:56–57).

Abiding in Christ

Single-session Bible study on Relationship with God, John 15:1–4. 6 pages. Leader Guide available.

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me (John 15:1–4).

Have you ever seen a lemon-lime tree or a lemon-orange tree? Grafting is where a branch from one tree is implanted into the trunk of another tree.

Like a branch, we were grafted into Jesus’ suffering and death, being united to Him. He alone became our source of love, life, and everything that is in life. And as we grow in the Word of God, He feeds us, strengthens us, and helps us bear fruit.
