Teach Me Too – Preschoolers with Learning Needs in Austin

Lutheran Special Education Ministries (LSEM) has seen a growing desire for early intervention support of children with learning needs. In 1976 LSEM began serving children with special learning needs in the Detroit area and has since expanded programs and services to include a presence in Lutheran schools nationwide. Their pilot program is Let It Shine Academy at Bethany Lutheran Church, Austin, Texas. The Teach Me Too program was designed to administer intervention strategies, address the unique needs of children with autism spectrum disorder and other unique needs such as hyperactivity issues, decreased or delayed social skills, developmental or speech delays, sensory integration difficulties, or other learning differences. As a resource for families, this program provides assessments, consultations, and materials to help children on an individual basis. This grant would help fund Teach Me Too, expand the Let It Shine Academy, provide teacher training, and offer scholarship funding for children whose families cannot afford the cost of the Let It Shine Program.

Water and the Word for Rural Schools in Kenya
2019–2021 Mission Grant 1 — $80,000
This is what the water looks like, in a lot of cases, before it goes into the filter. Without the clean water system, the students would drink this water that was gathered from the local river.
In 2008, a man from Nebraska traveling in East Africa saw the need for clean water and sought a way to help. Through contact with a social worker and educator in Nakuru, Kenya, he devised a system of installing water harvesting equipment (rain gutters and tanks), filters, hand washing stations and clean water storage to be installed in schools in Kenya. In 2016, members of The Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod from Nebraska took over the management of the project. They visit Kenya every year, traveling to schools assessing their water needs. Teams from the United States install rain gutters and tanks for storage. Hand washing stations and clean water “buckets’ are placed in every classroom. They teach personal hygiene, handwashing and the importance of drinking only clean water. WASH clubs, made up of students and staff, are formed to be responsible for the clean water program. The grant will help the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kenya (ELCK) to extend their ministry of Word and Sacrament by expanding the clean water project for their schools and orphanages.

Family Scholarships for Short Term Mission Trips
2017–2019 Mission Grant 21 — $60,000

MOST Ministries has been meeting the physical needs of people around the world as a way to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Through connections with LCMS missionaries and Lutheran church leaders, MOST is building churches and schools, providing health care, and teaching marketable skills, all the while sharing the love of Christ and the Gospel of our Lord. MOST feels it is important to recruit families into mission work not only because of the positive impact it has on the lives of those they serve, but on the families themselves. Serving as a family opens the eyes of their children to see how other people live and gives them a perspective of how fortunate they are in the United States. We are all aware of the increasing costs of travel. This grant will help to offset the expenses of approximately 50% of a typical trip. When the families return, they will share their experiences with their churches, communities, district, and the women of the LWML.

Prison and Jail Ministry Synod-wide Conference in 2018
2017–2019 Mission Grant 20 — $36,500
This is an Inmate Choir singing at a Divine Service being conducted by one of our LCMS Pastors.
One of the largest needs in Prison and Jail Ministry is not only the offering of Word and Sacrament ministry to those incarcerated, but also in assisting the person when he or she returns to the community. The Prison and Jail Ministry Conference enables over 200 lay and clergy participants from 30 of our LCMS districts to learn about the importance of prison and jail ministry as well as networking with one another for best practices and support of each other in a very difficult mission and ministry. A number of LCMS districts are already doing, or are starting up a Prison and Jail Ministry, and a Synod-wide conference will allow these to continue and expand as changes and new developments continue in the federal and state criminal justice systems. Grant funds would help pay for the expenses involved in hosting a conference.

RECONNECT to the Body of Christ
2017–2019 Mission Grant 19 — $50,000

The congregations of Texas District Circuit 28 have a great desire to work together as one group in training mission workers to share the Word and unite these congregations and communities. The Rio Grande Valley of Texas shares the border with Mexico and has a large Hispanic population, many of whom are among the poorest of poor, at risk and unchurched. They have developed a long-range plan to assist the struggling congregations in reaching out to the communities to bring the Word into the homes of hurting families. The first step in the plan has been realized with the arrival of a Director of Christian Education (DCE) that will be serving the circuit – not just an individual church. With this in place, the next stages can begin by training leaders within the congregations in a mission and ministry model utilized by a local, thriving congregation, building campus relationships with the 50,000 students attending local colleges, and conducting community mercy projects. These funds will assist in the project startup costs, training materials, transportation costs, scholarships, and other incurred expenses of the training program.
