We, as Lutheran Women in Mission, serve the Lord and give our mite offerings for missions. We do this with gladness but we do like to be appreciated and recognized for our gifts and services. When my grandson, Layne, was 3 years old (he is now 14 and taller than me) he taught me a valuable lesson on giving freely to the Lord. This little boy wanted to give his offering anonymously.
Each Sunday in church, Layne would ask for an envelope into which he would put his offering. He would take a pencil, carefully write his name on the envelope, insert his money, and seal it shut. One Sunday, he asked for the envelope and put his money inside. The usher was bringing the offering plate and I whispered to Layne that he needed to hurry and write his name. He simply replied, “No Grandma, today I’m going to give it free.” My 3-year-old grandson didn’t want credit for his gift. He just wanted to give it to Jesus.
God sent Jesus to die on a cross, saving us from sin, death, and the power of the devil. He did this freely. Because of His great gift of redemption, we take joy in giving our mite offerings freely also, so that Jesus’ love will be shared with others. You can give to mites right here so that all people may hear of His love and mercy.
In His service, filled with His joy,
