Doctrinal Review Keeps Us Focused

Two Minute Tuesday

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path (Psalm 119:105).

My sister received a devotional book as a gift, but she felt there was something missing. Though a Bible verse was included with each devotion, the daily thought mostly focused on what we should do to be kind, rather than on Jesus’ love for us and how He, by making the ultimate sacrifice on the cross, showed the greatest kindness of all.

Having attended the recent LWML Presidents Assembly meeting, where we listened to a session on the topic of doctrinal review, I was very aware of why this is so necessary. As we prepare devotionals and write Bible studies, our pastoral counselors review each one to ensure they focus on God’s Word and point us to our Savior and to all He has done for us.

We pray: Lord, guide our lives as we daily read your Word. Help us to focus on what You have done for us. Amen.

The Blessings of LWML Devotions

Two Minute Tuesday

Over the years, I’ve used LWML devotions (www.lwml.org/program-helps-devotions) for many events in my church group, zone, and district. The variety of topics on the website is quite amazing!

Recently, I browsed through that list and came across this title: “The Blessings of Chemo Day.” What? How could chemo day be a blessing? Here are a few of the writer’s inspiring words:

It is “chemo day.” What a blessing! I have the awesome privilege of visiting with my friends. These are new friends and the mix of people changes every time I am here. But sitting here for several hours gives me the opportunity to observe and pray for people.

A few years ago our church hosted an “Introduction to LWML” event which included four activity stations, one of which was “The Word.” Attendees were invited to select one of three devotions and share it with others. Be creative; how can you share LWML devotions to brighten someone’s day?

New Year’s Resolutions

Two Minute Tuesday

Approximately six weeks ago, a new church year began.  Now, 14 days into the new year 2020, have you made any new year’s resolutions?

LWML has a New Year devotion/eBible study entitled Resolutions.  The study focuses on the Magi whose resolution was to find the newborn King of the Jews.  It is one of several items which can be downloaded for use at a January meeting.

As I thought about a possible resolution for 2020, I decided to take advantage of an opportunity available to me.  My congregation conducts a short service that offers the Holy Eucharist Tuesday through Friday at 7:40 a.m. in addition to celebrating the Sacrament at each of our three weekend services.

I have not taken advantage of that opportunity as often as I could so my resolution is to get up a bit earlier at least once or twice a week and attend. Beginning the day partaking of Christ’s body and blood will enable me to walk in communion with Him for the day ahead.

How’s Your Prayer and Devotional Life?

Two Minute Tuesday

I’ve been leading our Friday night women’s Bible study, using Donna Pyle’s latest book, Perseverance: Praying through Life’s Challenges as our guide.

At a point in my life when I’ve been thinking more about how I manage my prayer and devotional time, I’ve examined my regular habit of meeting with the Lord each morning. I sit in my favorite chair, cup of coffee in hand, and read several devotional books, including Portals of Prayer and the Today’s Light devotional booklet, along with my Bible. I’ve been satisfied with this routine for many years.

However, after studying Perseverance, I realized I needed a more deliberate Bible reading and prayer practice, one that will make a difference. I now read Portals of Prayer and the Today’s Light devotion as I ride the train to work. This gives me more time earlier in the morning to read the Bible, pausing to pray and listening for God’s answers. I experience greater understanding in this new routine, and I find my prayer life is more deliberate and faithful.

Summertime

Two Minute Tuesday

How has your summer gone? Have you been enjoying the warmer weather, time off from school or work, and carefree days to just enjoy yourself? That, of course, is what summers are for, but it can also become a time to take a vacation away from God. Maybe we are too busy going here or there to go to church regularly during the summer months. We take vacations which can limit our attendance at church on Sundays. Our schedules are different and it is easy to skip doing devotions or reading the Bible as regularly as we normally do.

James 4:8a states Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. God wants us to have a continuous relationship with Him. He wants us to enjoy the blessings He provides and He desires us to involve Him in all that we do. LWML has many resources that you can use to stay connected with God even though you may be away from home or our usual routines. Visit lwml.org and you will find many devotions and Bible studies that you can print out and take with you as you travel. Take along the Lutheran Woman’s Quarterly to read as you relax at the lake. Praise God for the beauty of His world as you visit different areas of the country and spend time with family and friends. And remember He desires a relationship with you.

Firmly Planted

Two Minute Tuesday

I love working in my vegetable garden. It is my relaxing quiet time with God and His creation. One summer, the weeds were plentiful and surrounded each row of vegetables. As I pulled them one by one, I noticed my vegetables begin to stand tall without the many weeds trying to choke them out by taking all the water and nourishments away. I began to reflect on my life and those around me.

When the worries of life, the deceitfulness of others, and our own sinful desires try to choke us out from God's nourishment, we are like those weeds I pulled. We need to nourish ourselves on God's Word. Then we can encourage and equip those around us to be firmly planted in God's Word so that the weeds of daily living can't choke them out.  He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness (2 Cor. 9:10).

Who can you nourish today?

Peace

Two Minute Tuesday

It all started long ago when I was just a young kid, super excited to get my very own personalized book for Christmas. It was an adventure story where I traveled all over collecting letters. Once all the letters were collected together, it spelled the word PEACE.

Flash forward to my confirmation day. On the front of my keepsake certificate, I was given my confirmation verse: Peace I leave with you; "My peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid" (John 14:27).

As a mother, I had two premature babies, with one who struggled so much, that I longed for him to have peace, wherever that may be. After two months, he found that peace safe in the arms of Jesus.

My favorite part of a church service is the end ... when the pastor gives the benediction "... and give you His peace."

It took me a while to catch on to this theme throughout my life. God's peace has been such a comfort and energizer for me. Do you have something similar that draws you closer to the Lord wherever and whenever you are in need? Do you remember your confirmation verse? Have there been extra special moments in your LWML journey? Reflect on how God sustains you, and how in doing so, He does great things through you.

If you would like to take this further than two minutes, click on this link, ( Stillness in the Seasons of Life ) to view or print "Stillness in the Seasons of Life," one of the many wonderful Bible Studies and resources LWML has for growing your faith. Once refreshed through His Word, let's go out and "Serve the Lord with Gladness!"
