“Why, God?”

Have you ever had one of “those days?” Among other challenges, my latest “day” included receiving a letter from the IRS indicating an ongoing issue had not yet been resolved, and a daughter traveling to Hawaii who had not yet received her necessary Covid test results. I felt frustrated and angry! “Why, God?” 

My daily Bible reading that morning ended with Ruth, chapter one. Naomi, returning to Bethlehem, said she should be named Mara, meaning “bitter,” because the Almighty had brought calamity on her. That day I felt like calling myself “Mara.”

Working through my anger, Be still, and know that I am God (Psalm 46:10) came to mind, singing “Jesus Loves Me” also alleviated my stress. While looking at reSOURCEs for Planning Programs for August 2021 on the LWML website, I found a Bible study, “Why God? Trusting in God’s Goodness in Times of Disappointment and Anger.” 

I’m so thankful our Lord provides just the right resources to help us, not only for an LWML gathering, but also for personal Bible study and encouragement.

We Know His Promises

During the pandemic, I have enjoyed spending time putting together jigsaw puzzles. When working on a particularly challenging one, I thought how difficult it would be to complete without knowing what the finished puzzle would look like.

Isn’t that a lot like our life in this world? Like a challenging puzzle, by faith we know what the finished puzzle looks like! No matter the trials, hardships, or burdens we encounter, we run the race the Lord has mapped out for us, knowing He runs ahead of us, beside us, and behind us. We run toward the promised gift of an eternity spent with Him.

For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us (Romans 8:18).

As Lutheran Women in Mission, assured of our salvation, we share the life-saving Gospel message with others through the Word, our service, and our mite offerings.

On a Saturday morning, I drove a few of the women from my church to attend the LWML zone spring event being held at Peace Lutheran Church in Washington, DC. What a road trip! I had my GPS on, and even when I missed a turn, the GPS would re-calculate to get me back in the right direction.

Just like the GPS, God does the same thing. We might stray away or take a different path than what He intended, but He will not abandon us. He’s our GPS and will lead us back to the proper direction, to share our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ with others.

The Lord will keep you from all harm – he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore – (Psalm 121:7–8 NIV).

This is the day which the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it (Psalm 118:24 RSV).

Every morning when I get up, one of the very first things I do is eat breakfast: food for the body. The next thing I do is open up my iPad and look at my email. The first one I read is my daily Mustard Seed Devotion from LWML: food for the soul. 

I love that the devotions are short, to the point, and apply to me. It is a great way to start the day. Then I go to the news of the day, knowing that God is in control.

Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, (1 Corinthians 6:19).

Self-quarantining for the past year has taken a toll on our mental and physical health. My church’s parish nurse is concerned and is encouraging us to walk. Walking can be done anywhere, any time. Whether around the block, at the mall, or in a park, consider using this time to meditate on Scripture or to pray. The LWML app has many on-the-go devotions and podcasts. Would you rather go with a group? Consider meeting for a neighborhood prayer walk, or form an LWML walking group.

While out and about, you can witness with LWML logo-clothing or an LWML water bottle. When you’re asked about the meaning of the acronym, “LWML,” be willing to stop and take time to share Jesus.  

With the warmer spring weather, let’s lace up our sneakers and dot the landscape with purple!

Recently, I opened my Bible and found an unused “Read the Bible” schedule tucked inside. That made me wonder what the LWML might offer on the topic of Bible reading. So, I went to my favorite place on the LWML website — the “search this site” field. 

In the search field I typed “Bible Reading,” and up popped many, many resources: articles such as “Time Management” (organizational tips to help me find time to study the Bible); “Lessons with Shirley” (reading the same Bible passages as a friend and then sharing with each other); and “For Times Such as This” (which offers a variety of resources including links to sign up for daily Mustard Seed Devotions and LWML on the Go Podcasts). 

I encourage you to search a key word, topic, or Bible passage at lwml.org, such as “Amazing,” “Praise,” or “Psalm 100:2” and discover the wealth of resources available from LWML to help you grow in faith by studying God’s Word. 

“Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!" (Luke 11:28).

Change is one word Lutherans dislike hearing. “What’s wrong with the way things are?” is what we hear from many people. Change happens whether we want it to or not; we may not have any input as to how some changes come about, but we have learned how to use change to be of service to others.

This past year LWML members have seen many changes. We have become creative and innovative in how we hold gatherings with our fellow sisters. We have held virtual conventions, Zoom meetings, and online Bible studies.

Have you downloaded the updated LWML App to your smart phone or tablet? The LWML On The Go Podcasts found there are a great way to listen to devotions. With the app, you can connect with your LWML sisters through Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram.

The lwml.org website is continually changing. You can find resources there that are helpful for many occasions. Use it today! 

Let us always be thankful for an unchanging God in an ever-changing world.
