We’ve just celebrated our country’s independence. We honor those who have served, and are now serving, in the US armed forces. Thousands have been wounded or have given their lives for our country. The price of this freedom is high.

We, as Christians, are also free. Our Lord suffered, died, and ransomed us with His blood so that we may be free from sin, death, and the power of the devil. That price was very high.

An LWML Mustard Seed Devotion, titled “Freedom,” addresses this topic:

Those of us who have our freedom in and through Christ desire to respond. How? In his letter to the Galatians, Paul declares, For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Galatians 5:13-14).

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God (Colossians 3:16).

Have you ever heard something so exciting you felt as if you would burst if you could not share it? When the Word of God dwells in us, we cannot help but share it with others, using the talents and resources with which we have been individually gifted.

I am filled-to-bursting with excitement about the LWML Writers’ Workshop coming to the campus of Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, October 24-26, 2020. This retreat-style weekend will prepare authors to write Bible studies and devotions that will uplift and encourage women to grow in God’s Word and faith. In turn, women will be inspired to use their individual gifts “in ministry to the people of the world.” Registration opens July 1, 2020. One year from now we are praying, planning, preparing to meet in convention in Lexington, Kentucky! While I don’t have the answer to “What will next year bring?”, I do know that we want to continue to serve the Lord with gladness. We want to support missions and missionaries both in the States and abroad. We want people – now more than ever – to hear about their Savior, Jesus Christ!

So, we keep the faith. We keep supporting LWML. We keep researching potential mission grant proposals. We keep praying. We keep serving. We keep loving as Christ first loved us.

Family Zoom time. Facetime with Gramma. Live stream worship. Online meetings. These phrases have become common place in our world. Technology has proven to be beneficial, especially during the months of social distancing and lockdown we’ve experienced.

The beauty of being a child of God and calling Him “Daddy” is an instant connection. We don’t need to schedule a meeting, make sure our cyber space connections are working, and/or test our audio in order to connect with our Father.

I call upon you, for you will answer me, O God; incline your ear to me; hear my words (Psalm 17:6). How reassuring it is that we don’t need to program a specific technology in order to access our Lord. He is with us always, day and night. We know He is connected with us, listening to every word and thought that we have, even before we call.

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all (2 Corinthians 13:14).

While leading music at Vacation Bible School, I always tried to have the children learn to sing a round. Each part in a round compliments the others and adds beauty and dimensions to the song. One of my favorites taught the concept of the Trinity and how God the Father created us, God the Son redeemed us, and God the Holy Spirit sanctifies us.

June 7 was Trinity Sunday. We, with awesome wonder, appreciate the Trinity: three Persons yet only one God. Many throughout the world still need to hear the wonderful truth of how God the Father sent the Son, God the Son went to the cross, and God the Holy Spirit brings the cross to them for their eternal salvation.

During this time of social distancing and closed gyms, I have been walking a lot. During my walk this past Sunday, our worship service was being broadcast on Facebook. I turned up the volume and listened as I walked.

Our pastor was focusing on the fact that even though we are not in church, we are being the church wherever we are. We don’t need a building to share the Gospel, to pray for others, or to confess our faith. Even though we are separated from our church family, we are still children of God through our Baptism. Then our pastor made the connection between Baptism and all the hand washing we are to do every day. When we wash our hands, we are reminded of Jesus washing away our sins.

Through Baptism, we have been made sons and daughters of our Heavenly Father. He says, “I have called you by name, you are mine” (Isaiah 43:1b). Look on the LWML website for devotions on Baptism that will remind you that you are washed clean in Christ.

Our world seems to have been turned upside down since March 2020 when the effects of a pandemic hit the shores of our country. The “enemy” was an unseen, deadly virus that affected people from all walks of life — young, old, professional, unemployed, healthy, weak — its effects did not discriminate.

The LWML devotion “I Have Loved You With An Everlasting Love” shares a delightful story about a little girl who drops a message out of her window only to be picked up by a stranger walking by. The message: “To Whoever Finds This — I Love You!”

What a wonderful way to be reminded that we are loved — by God, by friends and family, by strangers. We are loved and we are encouraged to share love.

Sharing love can take many different forms — phone calls instead of hugs, written notes instead of lunch gatherings, personal prayers instead of corporate worship. No matter the method — the message is the same — God loves us all.
