Prison and Jail Ministry Synod-wide Conference

Making a difference in a changing world

LWML Mission Grant #20

Humbling is my word to summarize the LCMS 2018 Prison and Jail Ministry Conference.

Your generous Mite Box offerings financed this conference where dedicated pastors and lay people involved in prison and jail ministry came together to share experiences, learn from motivating speakers, and receive guidelines and resources.

I learned these servants of the Lord sometimes risk their lives, face lawsuits, work long hours, and drive long distances as they deliver the Gospel to people desperate to hear that Jesus loves and forgives. In the face of their dedication to those in our penal system, I gave thanks for the faithful support from our LWML family of brothers and sisters in Christ. Many of us may not ever step foot into a jail or prison, but we are lifting up the hands of the workers who brave this challenging mission and ministry.

Then the righteous will answer him, saying, “Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?” And the King will answer them, “Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me” (Matthew 25:37-40).

Continue to pray for all the mission grants. On Giving Tuesday your donation will be matched. Your support is needed. Please donate your offering at www.lwml.org/givingtuesday.

What Can We Give God?

Why do we expect gifts for our birthdays? Should we not be sending gifts to our parents for giving us life? Why do we expect gifts for Christmas? It is Jesus’ birthday, not ours. Ultimately, that all we have, including our faith, is a gift from the Almighty. We should be thanking God and giving to Him. God has given us life, food and clothing, shelter, family and friends, the list goes on but most importantly the hope of eternal life because of Jesus’ sacrifice.

woman showing daughter globeIn thankfulness for all He has given to each of us, is there anything we can offer that reflects our Lord’s desires? Yes! We can give to others as He has given to us. Jesus said “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:34). What a privilege to share His mercy and grace, and His message of salvation with the world. We serve, we love, we give mission offerings because He has first given to us!

What can we give to our Savior? Our lives, our service, our hands and feet, our silver and gold, our everything! At this very moment, souls are touched by God’s mercy and love through the LWML. As you peruse this website, you will find resources to help you serve others, grow and share your faith, and pray for and give to mission grants. Oh, the joy of returning His love!

In His service, filled with His joy,

Oh, Give Thanks unto the Lord for He is Good!

Praising God who has given me my great family and also my church family, warms my heart and makes me want, by the power of the Spirit, to give Him my all. I love to sing praises to God. I look around and see the wonders of His creation: mountains, oceans, the beautiful fall colors, the flowers, bright pinks, greens, yellows, gold, purples and reds. The creator of such great beauty loves me so much that He sent His only begotten Son to die for my sins and the sins of all people. He left His heavenly home and willingly became a sacrificial Lamb, seen clearly by His death on the cross.

Such love moves me to give to missions by way of my Mite Box. I also encourage my congregation to send in mite blessings so that the love of Jesus may be spread to others. As we approach Thanksgiving, let us make a joyful noise unto the Lord with our generous donations. Donate today!

Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth! Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into His presence with singing! Know that the Lord, He is God! It is He who made us, and we are His; we are His people, and the sheep of His pasture. Enter His gates with thanksgiving, and His courts with praise! Give thanks to Him; bless His name! For the Lord is good; His steadfast love endures forever, and His faithfulness to all generations (Psalm 100:1-5).

A Picture of the LWML or A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

I take a lot of pictures. In fact, you might say I love taking pictures. Sometimes when I pull out my camera the people around me audibly groan knowing they soon may be captured ‘on film’ — again.

If I were to put together a picture of LWML, what would it look like? How would LWML be described? Maybe something like the following:

LWML = Lutheran Women joyfully serving the Lord with gladness,

LWML = Lutheran Women excitedly sharing their faith in Jesus’ Christ,

LWML = Lutheran Women actively living their lives as God’s children.

When you attend an LWML gathering, what is the picture you see? I see Lutheran Women in Mission enjoying fellowship, giving their mite offerings, studying God’s Word, singing His praises, and using their gifts and talents to further God’s kingdom.

The pictures on these posters are joy-filled examples of Lutheran Women in Mission. How about displaying a set at your next LWML gathering? Do you already have a set? Great! If you don’t and since you’re on our home page, click on the Shop tab in the menu bar on the top right, and type in posters in the search box. Have fun displaying them at your next gathering. You’ll be sharing a picture of the LWML.

Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is (1 John 3:2).

To God be the glory!

Making a Difference in a Changing World

null

You are being offered a wonderful opportunity to reach others with the saving Word of Jesus. Of the 7.6 billion people living on earth, 31% claim to follow the Christian faith. This means two out of three people do not know Jesus!

Our LWML Mission Grants are reaching out to a world in need of the Gospel.

On the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, Giving Tuesday, November 27, you may donate toward the 2017–2019 LWML Mission Goal by using LWML Facebook, or at this website, lwml.org/givingtuesday. Your donation will be doubled on that day, thanks to the commitment of two generous donors.

Please pray and share this with everyone.  Give others, in your congregations, the opportunity to share in this mission, by placing offerings in your large Mite Boxes and donate them online on Giving Tuesday.

(If you are unable to donate online, you may send your contributions to the LWML office at 801 Seminary Place Suite L010, St. Louis, MO 63105.)

and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth (Acts 1: 8b).

The Mite Box

Most, if not all, organizations have something symbolic of their organization. The Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (LWML) is no exception. We have the Mite Box!

null

Based on the Biblical account of the widow’s mite (Luke 21:1-4), the Mite Box is intended for regular contributions to “mites” — offerings above and beyond the support an individual might give to their congregation. Mite Box contributions go hand-in-hand with LWML’s major emphasis of supporting mission and ministry efforts throughout the world. These Mite Box offerings have funded over 100 million dollars in mission grants since the LWML was organized in 1942.

Mite Box offerings may be gathered in any number of ways including LWML groups, zone, and district events, and are regularly (monthly) submitted to the LWML office at 801 Seminary Place, Ste. L010, St. Louis, MO 63105 (note new address) so that mission grants can be funded as they are received. Individual contributions are welcomed and encouraged. Remember, there are only five (5) months left in this biennium to reach the $2,075,000 Mission Goal.  Let’s keep filling those Mite Boxes!

It’s Fall – but Spring is just around the corner!

nullIt’s that time of year again, when the leaves of trees change color and begin to fall to the ground. In a few weeks trees, plants and lawns will be dormant, looking as if they are dead. Next Spring the trees will bud again, plants, and grass will come back to life.

This is a reminder that we too were dead in our sins. Christ came to renew our lives through His own death and resurrection, enabling us to live eternally through the gift of faith in Him.

God, as our source of ever renewed power, enables us to live, thrive, and do great work through Him in His kingdom, thus leaving a legacy for others who will follow. Lutheran Women in Mission today follow the women who came before them in service to the Lord by using their gifts, talents, and treasures.

The LWML continues the rich legacy of sharing the gospel of Christ.  Please consider a donation at www.lwml.org/donate-endowment-fund  or mail to the LWML Office, 801 Seminary Place, Suite L010, St. Louis, MO 63105. Note your donation as LWML 75th Anniversary Thank Offering.

According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again in a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead (1 Peter 1:3).
